You never can stop a Wicked Witch!

Good news! Wicked is back! Celebrating the 10th year since it opened on Broadway, Wicked will return to Melbourne starting May 10, 2014 for a strictly limited season of 18-20 weeks before it tours to Sydney and Brisbane. The entire cast was announced at this morning’s press event in Melbourne.

Ed Grey (Boq), Maggie Kirkpatrick (Madame Morrible), Lucy Durack (Glinda), Jemma Rix (Elphaba), Steve Danielsen (Fiyero), Glen Hogstrom (Dr. Dillamond) & Wicked Company

After finishing up her Helpmann Awards-nominated performance of Elle Woods in Legally Blonde, Lucy Durack is back to reclaim the role of the equally pink-obsessed Glinda the Good. In the role of Elphaba, who becomes the Wicked Witch, returns Jemma Rix who understudied the role in Melbourne the first time around before taking over the role during the Sydney run and continuing throughout Australia and Asia.

However, Lucy is not the only Legally Blonde alumni returning to Wicked. She will be joined by Steve Danielsen in the role of Fiyero along with Edward Grey as Boq, who is currently playing crowd favourite Kiki in Legally Blonde. And if these two performers are half as good as they are in their current roles, then the two lead girls will have a bit of competition for the spotlight!

To round out the main cast, Maggie Kirkpatrick is returning to the role of Madame Morrible after originating the role in Melbourne, Glen Hogstrom will reprise his turn as Doctor Dillamond and newcomer Emily Cascarino will take on the role of Elphaba’s strong-willed sister Nessarose.

Members of the ensemble will be; Justin Anderson, Daniel Assetta, Dion Bilios, Rachel Cole, Danielle Cook, Daniel Downing, Danielle Evrat, Mitch Fistrovic, Tom Handley, Emma Hawthorne, Matt Holly, Angela Lumicisi, Katie McKee, Kassie Martin, John O’Hara, Deanna O’Leary, Joseph O’Sullivan, Justine Puy, Chris Scalzo, Pharic Scott, Ryan Shepard, Ellen Sutton, Monica Swayne and Sophie Wright.

Now comes the interesting role for those marketing this show . . .

No doubt, a lot of the audience who saw the original tour will be ready to see it again when it opens next year. But how do you bring those back who usually only see a show once? That’s where the challenge is.

Discounting can damage the show’s perceived quality, purely bringing it back won’t bring this crowd, so what measures do you put in place to create new value for those who have already seen it? This is definitely something to keep your eye on over the next couple of months.

There is one more Wicked member which I forgot to re-introduce earlier. And while this one doesn’t quite compare to the main cast, I am equally excited to see the Wicked tram back in action! Roaming the city, it is a great way to remind tourists and Melbournians alike that Wicked has returned and they should definitely get onto booking those tickets now!
