Keeping up with Kinky Boots

Every new show on Broadway, West End and in Australia always book out the promotional end-of-the-hour segment on morning talk shows to do a performance of one or two numbers. But with everybody hogging the performance segments on Good Morning America and Sunrise, sometimes you need to find a different way to get yourself onto the show . . .

This obligatory morning talk show performance has become so common in professional theatre circles. It is done so often that it is absolutely necessary to announce that your show has arrived – and create some footage for YouTube. But unfortunately you can’t keep going back to these shows and perform another number every time you are looking for a little bit of extra publicity.

So what do you do . . .

In recent years, audience members have been showing more interest in visiting the stage door and getting a peek behind the curtain. As we have seen through Legally Blonde encouraging audience members to visit the stage door over the loud speaker and Wicked on Broadway offering a ‘Behind the Emerald Curtain’ Tour. With this peak in interest, the clever thing to do would be to take advantage of the trend.

Hence the growing increase in ‘behind-the-curtain’ talk show segments.

What better way to not only get your show into a segment, but also get an enthusiastic host, than to let them live out there Broadway dreams on television?

Kinky Boots targeted the Kris Jenner Show by giving Kris Jenner (matriarch of the Kardashian empire) a behind-the-scenes tour by lead actress Annaleigh Ashford, letting her try on costumes and allowing free reign of the stage. So, not only did Kris Jenner get something out of the PR event, but the show got a rather enthusiastic response because the host got a priceless experience for plugging it.

And with the sway that the Kardashian brand holds, I would be surprised if they didn’t receive a huge rush of ticket sales that afternoon!

So take the lead of Kinky Boots and mix it up a bit. (Plus, I’m sure it helped that the title of the show started with a K).
