Embracing New Theatre
While there may be a strong demand for big nostalgic musicals within the Melbourne theatre market, there also appears to be a growing audience with a taste for new theatre. A passion which has been shown through the reception of Matthew Robinson’s new work Atlantis getting its world premiere right here in Melbourne!
As a consumer, engaging with new theatre is always risky. We generally don’t like the idea of stepping out of our comfort zone into an experience where anything could happen. Or at least we didn’t!
Recently there has been move towards Melbourne audiences embracing new theatre. Incredibly popular seasons of King Kong and Eddie Perfect’s The Beast and Shane Warne: The Musical, just to name a few. And the next in this line of success stories appears to be Matthew Robinson’s Atlantis.
Following the final days leading towards the destruction of Atlantis, this new musical has been developed across Australia and the United States. The production has been guided by multi-Grammy and Academy Award winner Stephen Schwartz (Wicked) alongside representatives from some of the biggest theatre groups in the world; Disney Theatrical Productions, Manhattan Theatre Club and the Ambassador Theatre Group.
The musical has also been embraced by the Australian theatre community with an all-star Australian cast featuring:
- Lucy Durack (Private Lives, Wicked, Legally Blonde – The Musical)
- Gareth Keegan (Pirates of Penzance, Jersey Boys, Moonshadow)
- Kellie Rode (The Rocky Horror Show)
- Anne Wood (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Mamma Mia!)
- Bert LaBonte (The Mountaintop, An Officer and A Gentleman)
- Melissa Langton (We Will Rock You)
- Emily Langridge (Les Misérables)
- Lisa-Marie Parker (Cats)
- Sophie Carter (King Kong)
- Cameron MacDonald (Godspell)
- Joel Parnis (The Producers) and;
- Ben Nicholson (Playground)
This impressive list of cast and guides combined with Matthew Robinson’s wide range of awards has made Atlantis hot property in the Melbourne theatre market. So popular that the first night sold out two weeks in advance of the performance prompting a second performance to be added!
Firm interest has been expressed by Broadway producers and investors for this work, meaning this is the only chance that Australian audiences will get to see this musical before it moves to New York City. Details on purchasing tickets are below – and with the great reception this musical is currently receiving you will need to book those tickets NOW!

P.S. I think there might be one more reason why Melbourne audiences are embracing new theatre. The opportunity to be the first to see a show. When all these shows move overseas to much greater audiences, we can always say that we saw it first! Or is that just me . . . ?
