Sailing the High Seas with Anything Goes

After the success of their last two ventures into the world of musical theatre, Opera Australia is sailing back into this genre next year with an Australian production of the Cole Porter favourite, Anything Goes.

Touring Australia throughout 2015, this production of Anything Goes is capitalising on the success of Opera Australia’s last two musicals starring Lisa McCune and Teddy Tahu Rhodes. The King and I and South Pacific have been extraordinarily popular with the opera audiences while also inviting new audiences into their first Opera Australia production. Unfortunately, crowd-favourite Lisa McCune won’t be stepping into the shoes of evangelist turned nightclub singer Reno Sweeney for Anything Goes, but a number of huge and popular names have been released today for this highly anticipated production.

Starring as Reno Sweeney, Caroline O’Connor is returning to the Australian stage after performing around the world. She hit the West End stage with new musical Life of the Party and starred as Miss Shields in the musical adaptation of A Christmas Story on the Great White Way – a role in which she was featured at the 2013 Tony Awards. Most recently, she was nominated for a 2014 Helpmann Award for her critically-acclaimed performance in Gypsy.

Alongside this world-renowned musical theatre icon, Todd McKenney will be appearing as Lord Evelyn Oakleigh, Carmen Duncan will be making her musical theatre debut as Evangeline Harcourt and Wayne Scott Kermond will play gangster and “Public Enemy Number 13”, Moonface Martin. Deborah Krizak will play Erma and Alan Jones will be returning to the stage (much to the delight of many grandmothers) as The Captain of the S.S. American.

Joining these experienced actors will be Alex Rathgeber and Claire Lyon as young lovers Billy Crocker and Hope Harcourt. Alike Caroline O’Connor, these two performers have graced international stages due to their starring roles in The Phantom of the Opera on the West End and in the International Touring Company respectively.

Featuring musical standards such as You’re The Top, De-Lovely, Blow Gabriel Blow and Anything Goes, accompanied by an incredibly appealing cast, this production is bound to perform well across Australia.
