Prowling back to Australia!

Straight from its highly acclaimed West End revival, the ever-popular Cats is back touring the world making its way to Australia later this year. And while Nicole Sherzinger won’t be coming with the production from London, there is another reason for younger audiences to get involved!

Based on T.S. Eliot’s ‘Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats’, the show is set in a junkyard which forms the playground for a host of feline characters including Rum Tum Tugger, Mr. Mistoffelees, Old Deuteronomy and Grizabella. Every year these cats come out of the shadows to play on the night of the Jellicle Ball. Telling stories for the amusement of their benevolent leader Old Deuteronomy, one cat is chosen to ascend to the Heaviside Layer and is reborn into a whole new jellicle life.

Cats is one of the longest-running shows on both Broadway and the West End. The show debuted in London in 1981 before running for an impressive 21 years and winning the Olivier Award for Best Musical before opening on Broadway in 1983 where the production ran for 18 years. It is has even breached that difficult line between theatre and pop culture forming the running joke on The Nanny when theatre producer Maxwell Sheffield constantly regretted the decision of turning down the original production of the now world-famous phenomenon.

‘Memory’ is arguably the most iconic song from this well-known musical providing the basis for covers from an incredibly diverse range of performers from Barry Manilow to Barbra Streisand. If you were asked to name a song from a musical, there is no doubt that ‘Memory’ would be at the top of many people’s lists – even those who never visit the theatre or have seen the show. It has translated outside the realms of the theatre into the pop charts more times that anyone can count.

But Andrew Lloyd Webber is pushing for a new hero song with this production.

The Rum Tum Tugger is one of the stars of the show blowing the audience away with his big rock number in Act One. But this song which originally brought the sounds of popular, contemporary rock into the traditional theatre has been rewritten for a new generation by the original creative team.

Inspired by the popularity of rap in mainstream culture, the Rum Tum Tugger has gone from rock idol to gangsta with newly written rapping verses and the addition of some impressive breakdancing. Clearly written to appeal to the up and coming theatre audience who are reached with edgier shows, such as In The Heights, the iconic ‘Memory’ may have some competition in the general public’s consciousness.
