Hamer Hall is alive with The Sound of Music
Have you ever been to the theatre and wanted to burst out in song with the performers? Watched Eponine dying from a gunshot and wanted to join in on the last verse of On My Own? Shown your support for Elphaba as she takes off singing along with Defying Gravity? Now is your chance to join the most famous musical theatre legend ever, Julie Andrews, as Sing-A-Long-A Sound of Music returns to Melbourne.
The Sound of Music has to be the most iconic movie musical of all time. Every child has grown up seeing this movie musical at least once and, for many, it is the inspiration which sparks a future love of musical theatre. And who out there hasn’t belted the title song in their living room when they have an empty house? Well, now is your opportunity to do that in public and not have to worry about surprising any innocent bystanders.
Sing-A-Long-A Sound of Music returns to Hamer Hall this year to celebrate the film’s 50th birthday. Rather than the traditional stage show where you are meant to sit with the rest of the audience in silence, this performance encourages quite the opposite. Hosted by Australian musical theatre star Chelsea Plumley (Guys & Dolls, Promises, Promises), the audience get to sit back and watch the film joining in with the famous songs – as we already know the words. And in case you have forgotten any, there’s no need to worry as they play the subtitles on the screen.
This event always attracts an incredibly diverse audience from young children to adults of all ages with the one common passion for The Sound of Music. In fact, a lot of these fans are so passionate that they will come dressed up as their favourite character or inanimate object mentioned in the film which has inspired a costume competition. Past audience members have dressed up as everything from Nuns and ‘girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes’ to goats and even the Alps (you might need to book two seats if this is your costume choice)!
Channel your inner lonely goatherd, start practicing your curtain sewing and make sure you grab your tickets to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the world’s favourite movie musical.
