Somehow, Some day, Somewhere . . .
The Production Company is a Melbourne institution. Every year, without fail, the company puts on at least three large-scale productions in some of Melbourne’s most prestigious theatres. And the 2015 season marks an impressive milestone with their 50th production, West Side Story.
Set on the Upper West Side in the mid-1950s, West Side Story transports Shakespeare’s infamous Romeo and Juliet to racially and socially divided New York proving that the Bard’s works truly are timeless even if they need a bit of reinvention to reach out to modern audiences. The musical has inspired numerous productions around the world, a popular movie adaptation and created songs which have their own legacy – Maria, America and Tonight.
To open their 2015 season and their 50th production, The Production Company has assembled an all-star cast. West Side Story stars Anna O’Byrne, from the Australian production of Love Never Dies and West End’s Phantom of the Opera, as Maria alongside Production Company-favourite Gareth Keegan as Tony. Joining this well versed pair will be real-life husband and wife Deone Zanotto and Adam Fiorentino as Anita and Bernado, Sean Mulligan as Riff, Rob Tripolino as Chino.
Rounding out the cast will be Neil Melville, Tony Rickards, Glaston Toft, Dean Vince, Jared Bryan, Alex Given, Franky Drousioti, Joshua Mulheran, Max Patterson, Blake Appelqvist, Jordan Turner, Sage Douglas, Sheridan Anderson, Danielle Hegarty, Brittany Page, Victoria Rimington, Andrea Carmody, Nat Jobe, Ross chisari, Max Bimbi, Maxwell Trengove, David Sirianni, Bianca Baykara, Antonia Marr, Madeleine Mackenzie, Ella Burns, Romy Vuksan and Samantha Bruzzese.
West Side Story is playing at Arts Centre Melbourne’s State Theatre from Saturday 11th to Sunday 19th July. The Production Company shows are always some of Melbourne’s hottest tickets, so make sure to get yours at http://www.artscentremelbourne.com.au before they sell out!
