Opening the season will be the return of Caroline O’Connor in the iconic Funny Girl. Directed by Gale Edwards, Funny Girl follows the story of Fanny Brice from stage-struck teen to star of the Ziegfeld Follies and will see Caroline joined by stage legends Nancye Hayes and David Hobson. This production will open at Arts Centre Melbourne’s State Theatre on July 23 for a strictly limited ten performances.

Audiences have always been fascinated by what goes on behind the curtains in a theatre, and the second show of the 2016 season gives them the opportunity to peer backstage. Curtains is set in Boston, 1959, when the supremely untalented leading lady of Robbin’ Hood of the Old West is murdered onstage. Enter Lieutenant Frank Cioffi, local detective and passionate amateur theatrical, who must solve this murderous mystery so the show can go on. Joining Simon Gleeson as Frank Cioffi will be an all-star Australian cast featuring Alinta Chidzey, Melissa Langton, Lucy Maunder and Alex Rathgeber when the show opens at the State Theatre on August 20 for ten performances. (Let’s hope life doesn’t imitate art with this show!).

Closing out 2016 will be the return of Australian musical Dusty at Arts Centre Melbourne’s Playhouse from November 12 for 17 performances. Starring Australia’s latest leading lady Amy Lehpalmer as Dusty Springfield, this production features all the hits of this iconic songstress while following her journey from shy, young Londoner to blonde, pop-icon! Todd McKenney will join the cast as Dusty’s long-time confidant and hairdresser.
