Raising the Curtain on the cast of Curtains
The whodunnit genre is incredibly popular across many entertainment mediums. Agatha Christie ruled the literature market for years with her crime fiction novels. Most of our favourite television shows are based on this premise with Scandal, Scream Queens, Miss Fisher’s Murder Mystery and Broadchurch taking full advantage keeping the audience in suspense. But they aren’t often used for musicals . . . until The Production Company opens Curtains on August 20.
Curtains is a hilarious detective thriller set on the opening night of a cowboy musical Robbin’ Hood of The Old West. The talentless leading lady is murdered onstage during a curtain call, the whole cast are suspects, and the detective who has been called in to save the show and solve the crime also moonlights as a musical theatre fan. With music and lyrics by the iconic Broadway team Kander & Ebb, who have created Cabaret and Chicago, the show is a parody of backstage murder mystery plots.
Simon Gleeson (Les Miserablés) has previously been announced as Lieutenant Frank Cioffi, the detective who moonlights as a musical theatre fan – a role originally played by David Hyde Pierce on Broadway. Joining the previously announced Alex Rathgeber, Lucy Maunder, Melissa Langton and Alinta Chidzey are Colin Lane, John Wood and Nicki Wendt alongside an impressive ensemble of Australia’s best talent including Zoe Coppinger, Stephen Wheat, Simon Maiden Tony Rickards, Jared Bryan, Daniel Assetta, Amy Berrisford, Brett Fisher, Ashley Hauschild, Joe Meldrum, Madeleine Perrone, Emma Russell, Alicia Attwood, Matt Douglas, David Hammond, Jess Lindon, Anthony Pepe, Justine Puy and Darren Tyler.
The Creative Team will consist of award-winning Director Roger Hodgman, Musical Director John Foreman and Choreographer Dana Jolly with Esther Marie Hayes creating the costumes, Christina Smith creating the sets, Matt Scott designing lighting and System Sound.
Curtains will open at the State Theatre, Arts Centre Melbourne for a strictly limited season from August 20 to 28. For more information on this incredible cast or to discover more about the production, visit theproductioncompany.com.au
