Hello, Production Company 2017 Season!
“It’s so nice to have you back where you belong”
Melbourne’s The Production Company are heading into their 19th season this year with a superstar selection of musicals and casts all announced by chairman Jeanne Pratt today in a “new season at Arts Centre Melbourne guaranteed to thrill.”
For the last few years, The Production Company has produced two enormous musicals in the cavernous State Theatre followed by a smaller production in the Playhouse. This year, they are flipping that on its head opening the 2017 season with a significant Playhouse run of Hello, Dolly! Playing from May 27 to June 11.
Dolly is one of those roles reserved for the matriarchs of theatre whenever it is produced. And everyone who’s anyone has stepped into these flamboyant shoes from Carol Channing to Bette Midler who is starring in the upcoming Broadway revival. For this exclusive Melbourne production, one of Australia’s foremost leading ladies – Marina Prior – will be stepping into the lead role with guaranteed chemistry between her and her male lead, Grant Piro, who also happens to be her husband in real life.
Returning to the State Theatre from July 29 to August 6, the second show for the year is Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s global phenomenon Jesus Christ Superstar. Making his Production Company debut in the role of Jesus will be Rob Mills alongside Alinta Chidzey as Mary Magdalene and Zoy Frangos starring as Judas amongst a brilliant cast and production team.
The Production Company’s last show of 2017 will revive a well-worn production of the 1940s, Lerner and Lowe’s classic Brigadoon. In a completely new take on this golden age classic by director Jason Langley and musical director Michael Tyack who helmed last year’s smash hit Dusty, Production Company favourite Rohan Browne and newcomer Genevieve Kingsford will star alongside theatre legend Nancye Hayes and, Helpmann Award winner for her role as Miss Honey in Matilda, Elise McCann.
This season also heralds the release of new subscription packages for previews and the introduction of a Tuesday matinee production. For more information on the full season and to purchase tickets, visit www.theproductioncompany.com.au
