Shanghai Ballet’s Swan Lake

When it comes to ballet, there is no ballet more famous than Swan Lake. The legendary story of a Prince falling in love with a beautiful maiden cursed to be a swan by day has been reimagined by numerous directors and the most prestigious ballet companies the world over. Now, under the eye of renowned British choreographer Derek Deane, the Shanghai Ballet brings Swan Lake back to Melbourne.

The corps of the Shanghai Ballet rivals that of any world famous company. With over thirty years of dance history, the Shanghai Ballet holds a predominant position in China’s ballet culture and around the world creating and staging many acclaimed ballets including Jane Eyre (Patrick de Bana), A Sign of Love (Betrand d’At) and Hamlet (Derek Deane).

Swan Lake has captivated the world due to its incredible technical demands and this upcoming production from the Shanghai Ballet will bring an enormous cast of 80 dancers, including 48 swans, to the Regent Theatre for a strictly limited series of five performances from Thursday 20th April to Monday 24th April.

Along with 450 stunning costumes and 10 tonnes of scenery, this is an incredible opportunity to see some of the most precise and graceful dancers to grace Australia’s stages in a ballet requiring impeccable skill.
