Dream Lover Cast Announced

Audiences used to flock to Melbourne’s State Theatre every December for their annual summer musical and Arts Centre Melbourne, in partnership with John Frost, are reviving that old tradition with a Melbourne season of new show Dream Lover – The Bobby Darin Musical. Playing from December 29th for a strictly limited season, John Frost has today announced the cast who will be joining David Campbell as Bobby Darin after an acclaimed world premiere run at Sydney’s Lyric Theatre.

Returning to the role of Sandra Dee, Bobby Darin’s first wife, will be Hannah Fredericksen straight off the back of appearing as Olivia Newton-John in the TV mini-series Molly and the Green Room-nominated production of City of Angels. The other returning principles from the Sydney season will be Marney McQueen (Hairspray, Moonshadow, Priscilla) in the role of Bobby’s sister – who is revealed much later in life to have actually been his mother – and Martin Crewes (Sweet Charity, Doctor Zhivago, South Pacific) as Steve Blautner, Darin’s oldest friend, biggest fan and longtime manager.

New to the production is Marina Prior who has just finished a season leading The Production Company’s Hello, Dolly!, who will be reprising a role originated by Caroline O’Connor in the Sydney production while she is currently performing in a star turn as part of the new Broadway production of Anastasia. Australian theatre royalty, Marina Prior, will be playing the dual role of former showgirl and Bobby’s mother – later revealed to be his grandmother – as well as the ambitious, cut throat Mary Douvan, Sandra Dee’s mother.

The cast will also be joined by Rodney Dobson (Singin’ in the Rain, Les Misérables) who will play Charlie, Nina’s partner and a father figure in Bobby’s life, after he has finished his current run in the sell-out Australian tour of My Fair Lady.
