A Fine Romance: Melbourne Season

Every era has its own dance icon. From the swiveling hips of Elvis to the graceful movements of Anna Pavlova, there is one dancer who still shines above and beyond all other performers. Fred Astaire. Renowned as one of the most talented song-and-dance men history has produced, he is coming back to life in A Fine Romance: The Magic of Fred Astaire playing at Chapel off Chapel from October 10 for a strictly limited season.

A Fine Romance has been touring the country playing to full houses and dazzled crowds across Australia, bringing the old world glamour and charm of the 30s and 40s in an all-singing, all-dancing tribute to the most famous dancer of all time.

Joe Meldrum has the unenviable task of bringing this much-loved dance legend to life. But Fred Astaire isn’t known for his solo performances. Joe will be joined on stage by Imogen Moore who is taking the place of the many era’s leading ladies who joined Fred on the floor, including Judy Garland, Audrey Hepburn, Rita Hayworth and, his most famous partner, Ginger Rogers.

This talented pair will be accompanied by Daniele Buatti on piano and a jazz ensemble as they recreate the iconic dance routines of the era from the humble beginnings on Broadway through to his starring Hollywood days. With stunning costumes, glitz and glamour, the show will feature the timeless music of Irving Berlin, Cole Porter and the Gershwins.

A Fine Romance had its world premiere in Adelaide in 2016 and has since toured extensively through South Australia, Victoria and Queensland, selling out shows and breaking box office records wherever it played. The upcoming season at Chapel off Chapel will be the show’s first Melbourne production that will no doubt leave audiences as thrilled as they have been across the rest of the country before touring through Western Australia, New South Wales, Victoria, Northern Territory and Tasmania in 2018.

“We are extremely excited about this show,” said Margaret Fisk AM, writer and producer. “Not only is the story of Fred Astaire fascinating, we also feature an incredible selection of his songs and of course, the extraordinary dance routines that he was famous for. Audiences everywhere have simply fallen in love with A Fine Romance and with the incredible performances by Joe and Imogen’.

A Fine Romance plays for a strictly limited season at Chapel off Chapel from October 10, 2017. For more details on the production and to book tickets to a show that has sold out every other performance, visit www.chapeloffchapel.com.au
